Running for Sharks

"Huy ano?! Sumali ka na!"

That was LA, my officemate who convinced me to join the Condura Run at the Fort scheduled earlier this morning. He's been joining fun runs(I wonder how they call it "fun" when it isn't ---unless you compare it to a half-marathon or marathon I guess) for sometime now but he doesn't look like it, thanks to endless drinking sessions with his buddies.
I've only joined a fun run once: a 5km run during Grade 5 or 6, I think. I don't even recall why I joined the thing but I remember at the last 1 or 2km stretch, I was already out of breath. It was a really difficult 1st-time run and, that was that. I haven't joined another fun run ever since.
It was last Monday when I thought, "Since I've been on and off the treadmill these past 2+ years, maybe I should give it (fun run) a shot? I've been running 3-4kms on the treadmill anyway so I think I could be conditioned for a 5k?"

The Condura Run registration deadline was on March20 (Friday) so I really had to give it enough thought if I'm really ready for this. It's not to win the race but my target was just to finish it at a respectable time.
Tuesday night. On the way home, I planned out a running course in our neighborhood. Since the car had an odometer, I reset TRIP A to 0-km and plotted out my running course: a total of 1.5km. So, if I were to run 5kms, I would have to run the course at least 3.5 times.

Thursday morning, 6:23am. It was a good time to sleep. Mind over matter, I woke up and tied my running shoes on and ran the course I made the other day. It was rather challenging to run the course since I had to avoid cars pass by (in inches) close to me. Another were the dogs at one of the streets which forced me to walk. I walked most of the time after 3-4kms.
The time? 40mins.
MP, another officemate who runs, posted 34mins on his last 5km run. So I guessed the 40mins that I recorded is respectable enough.
Until Friday morning I still haven't registered. It was already the last day to register. It was now or never. With the Condura Run registration form tacked on my office cubicle staring me at the face as if teasing me, I finally made my decision.
Friday, lunchtime. I proceeded to Nike Boni High Street for registratio. Paid the P300.00 fee and got my race-kit and t-shirt (nice, btw, but not for running). The race would start at 6am.
My cellphone alarmed at 5am, Sunday morning so I got up and made myself ready. Kissed the missus goodbye and proceeded to the refrigerator downstairs to get my banana which I bought after taking-out KFC for dinner Saturday night. A glass of water from the water dispenser and I was off to the Fort.
I walked to the starting line at about 5:40am. It was very crowded with all sorts of runners: newbies, amateurs, and pros. The latter have started running at 5:30am since they had to run 21kms (a half-marathon). By 5:50am the 10k runners (LA included) started and, by 6am, the 5km run began. It was the first time I saw soooo many ipod users in one small area.

I would've been mistaken for a Nike model since, by coincidence, I wore a cap, watch, shirt, shorts, and shoes showing the swoosh logo. Save, of course, for the Jansport beltbag that I had to wear since it contained my car keys, and cellphone which I've programmed to add my running songlist aptly entitled "Run!":

1. Enter Sandman - Metallica
2. Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet
3. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
4. Insomnia - Craig David
5. Jump - Van Halen
6. Pretty Vegas - INXS
7. Seek and Destroy - Metallica
8. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns and Roses

I was afraid that wearing earphones might cause it to fall out every now and then so I used the missus' headphones to be sure.

I kept my jogging pace up to 2.5kms, overtaking most of the pack. I knew my exact distance since I stopped at the water station (stationed every 2.5kms). The road started its uphill climb after that. Like I car running in 4th gear reaching the bottom of a mountain, I switched to 1st, i.e. walked until I had passed Market2x.
It was then jog/walk/jog/walk/jog after that. The finish line was a bright sight to see, and, as I passed it, I clicked "STOP" on my watch-timer and recorded my unofficial time: 33mins, 29secs.

It was a great feat for me since my treadmill runs usually last 34mins for 4kms only. So the Condura Run I recorded was a personal first-time best.

So here I am, with my lower calf muscles aching from the race, looking at this website: the Men's Health Miracle 10km Run next Sunday. It's a major step from this morning's run so I think I will have to give this more thought.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder if I lost weight? We'll find out tomorrow morning. :)

Weight Loss Update: Slowly but surely

I was able to get the weekend pass by without too much over endulging on food, except for that Sunday merienda where I ate 3 slices of Yellow Cab pizza (but didn't had dinner). So, I'm STILL at 172.8lbs from Monday until this morning (tadaaaan!).

Hopefully tuloy tuloy na at wala nang relapse. Apr20, the end date of our little contest for that coveted Zoom Kobe IV, is a month away. So, whatever it is that I did to reach 172.8lbs, I should continue doing (and more!).

Here we go!

Galing! Anthony Hopkins' acting was superb as well as Ryan Gosling's.

A great thriller that'll keep you guessing 'til the end.

Running: The Next Fad?

Badminton started its boom here in the Philippines about the year 2002. That's when we started seeing badminton courts mushrooming almost everywhere. With badminton newbies going to sports shops and buying their racquets and shuttles, it suddenly became everybody's sport.

Recently, I'm seeing my relatives and a lot of my officemates started joining 5k/10k fun runs. I'm seeing a lot of marathons/funruns being organized lately ---even our office organized one last year. Could it be that running is now the next fad after badminton? Versus the latter, the only basic investment that one needs to have is a good pair of running shoes versus the shoe+racquet gear for badminton.

We'll see in the next couple of months if the sport truly picks up.

Air Jordan XI

In the twenty-over models of the Air Jordan shoe worn, of course, by Michael Jordan in the NBA, the one I like best was the Air Jordan XI. It just stands out.

Even sportswrap.berecruited.com voted it as the #1 Air Jordan shoe out of their Top 10 Air Jordan Shoe list.

Hmmm, I hope Nike re-releases this shoe. Malapit na kase DBTI inter-batch tournament (next month).  Heehee.

Varicella Zoster Virus

This air-borne virus that causes chickenpox had unfortunately found itself two new hosts: the missus and Matteo. The missus' spots showed up last Friday and then Matteo's last Sunday.

Lucas, fortunately, wasn't infected (hopefully never) since he was given the anti-VZV vaccine when he turned 1 year old. I wasn't infected since I had already acquired chickenpox back when I was in college.

What bothers me is that why is chickenpox so common during summer? Can anyone help explain?

Anyway, I hope they both recover soon, especially Matteo who's only 2 months old.

Voltes V

Until I reached college, I never really had a barkada I could call my own. I was strictly raised as an eskwela-bahay son, with the daily reminder that finishing one's studies is more important than going out and play with the neighbors.

That all changed when I entered 3rd year college, particularly the laboratory subjects. The lab professor required all students to put themselves in groups of 5. This will become your permanent lab team for the rest of the semester. The opportunist in me sought immediately the nerds in class to hopefully get a slot with their group. This will mean smooth sailing until the final exam. Sadly, the nerd group was got filled up immediately. I think there were 2 nerd groups that time. Yup, a lotta nerds.

It was BN and me who went looking for a group. BN, who'd just transfered from PUP, was a tall quiet fellow who was a classmate since elementary and high school. We were about to end our search when RC, another DB Makati batchmate, signaled us to join his group of 3, together with RS and OH, both graduates of DB Manda high school.

We stuck together until the end of the semester. Surprisingly, the group jelled together wonderfully. We all passed. Succeedingly, we formed the same group until 5th year until we graduated. The other groups gave a neat label to us, Voltes V, since we'd always automatically "volt-in" when grouping time comes.

In between the lab projects and other group presentations/reports, that group had exposed me to more social events that I could imagine: soirees, meet-ups, being hosts to all-girl forums, dates, inuman, etc.

Needless to say, we became the best of friends.

That friendship went beyond college. Even when we all started working, we always took the time to meet up whenever we can. Miggys, Dencios, bike rides from Sucat to Bicutan, double dates, our own darts tournament, billiard tournaments, etc.

Even when 4 of us got married and had children, we all still keep in touch thru texts, emails, and chat.

That friendship is now 16yrs old.

BN is now based in the US with his family. RS is planning to migrate his family to New Zealand. OH is waiting for his petition results to the US. While RC and me may have decided to spend the rest of our lives here in Manila.

Last weekend, we all met at a resto in Bicutan to listen to some band called "Hebigats" whom RS seems to be fascinated with lately. In between the songs, we all tried to catch up and tell old stories but it wasn't enough. So, after the band's second set, we all hopped onto our cars and drove off to Figaro Sucat. But then, it was closed.

This didn't stop Voltes V from venturing on. With RC and me hopping onto RS family van, we managed to have coffee at Starbucks Alabang next to ATC. For about 1-2hrs, we all shared old stories and at the same time each one's hopes for his family (except for RC who's still single btw ---but dating. GO RC!).

I looked at my watch. 2AM. The missus could be worried by now. BN and his family will be flying back to the US the following Monday, RS could be going to NZ by December, and OH could be in the US by next year.

I asked the guys to wrap up, and, as we were all walking back to the car, I uttered to RS, "Malamang matagal-tagal bago tayo magkakasama uli ng kumpleto ano?"

RS and RC gave a nod. That's life I suppose.

Biggest Loser Update

Every Monday the 5 "contenders" in our Biggest Loser contest is required to email the group their current weight. Seeing that PT had lost almost 2kg since Feb2 made me wonder if I could still win it at my current pace. Add to that the binging I do come Saturdays and Sundays since all that delicious home-cooked food and dinner-outs come into play.

This week, as usual, we all sent our kg-weights and EG, the author of this little contest, sent the spreadsheet to show the progress:

Surprisingly, PT has relapsed from his 1.66kg initial cumulative loss and is now dead last. RT is leading the pack with a cumulative 2.57kg loss since Feb2. Since the contest ends Apr20, I think I still have enough time to chase RT and win that precious (precious!) Zoom Kobe IV. I just have to kick my programme several notches (I'm currently looking into joining those 5KM fun-runs).

Let's see!

Relapse

Had a long weekend (Fri-Sun) last week due to a night system activity which I had to attend. The weekend was filled with pizzas, pasta, and Owa's special killer bulalo (which none has dared beat). I was at 176lbs Saturday morning so, in a state of panic, I hopped onto my treadmill for a 4km run. Sunday morning I ran 4km again.

I've dropped to 175.2lbs as of this morning but still it's a long way from the 173.8lbs that I achieved last Feb19.

Sigh, buti weekday na uli. So I'm back to my wheat-bread peanut butter breakfast and snacks. Btw, I hope to run more this week thanks to my sister's mp3 which I heard yesterday: "Insomnia" by Craig David.

Kewl song!

Meralco Stocks

If you had P3,600.00 last June 2008 and bought 100 stocks of Meralco (MER) at P36.00/stock (plus necessary charges/taxes of course), by today (Feb 19, 2009) your original investment of P3,600.00 would've ballooned to P8,800.00. That's a hefty profit!

Such is the "game" of stock-investing. If you play your cards right, you'll win! I think the important thing here is to know the right stocks to invest in. Specifically, I suggest you invest in those companies that have products that are always in steady demand (Meralco, SanMig Beer) and those whose industry you're very familiar of. In my case, that would be PLDT and Globe.

I hope the current economic crisis that we're in improves soon. So that stocks will go up, and we'll all be happy (investors) again.

Binging on Weekends

So far I've lost 2lbs. The problem is that although I'm losing weight from Monday to Friday, all that lost weight is almost gained in the weekend.

I'd really have to up the ante on the pounds lost. The other guys in our small bet have lost more than my 2-pounder.

2.17.2009

If I had P200,000,000

Wow, no one won the P206M Lotto jackpot last Sunday. So I guess the amount will increase in time for the next scheduled draw.

If I had P200M, I would....

....buy a house, particularly that unit in Poinsetta Residences near our place which costs P14M

....buy either a BMW Roadster or a Mercedes Benz SLK

....give P20M to charity (or 10% of my winnings)

....buy PLDT and Meralco stocks

....enrol a portion of my money in Time Deposits
....buy mutual funds

....give 1 or 2M to my Lola in Ilocos Sur

....schedule another trip to LA

....and so on.

So, expect long queues this afternoon until before 8pm. Hopefully, no one wins (so that I can bet next time, hehe).

A Different Feb14 Date

This year's Valentine's Day date was a whole different one as I surprised the missus with a Dinner Cruise on a yacht courtesy of Realship Corporation.

Thanks to clickthecity.com, I was able to contact Realship to make a reservation. The Feb14 dinner is a once-in-a-year thing since the rest of the year, the yacht is rented for events, parties, and marriage proposals. The latter costs a hefty P22,000 which includes food and musicians. Of course, the engagement ring is not included (smile).

The Feb14 dinner was for 11 couples only, with the tables spread out all over the yacht. It costs roughly P3,000/person and includes a 4-course dinner made by an international chef.

The duration of the dinner was for 2 hours which goes around Manila Bay from the yacht's dock next to Harbour Square(?) to Sofitel to Mall of Asia. It was a delightful experience to see the MOA fireworks just a few feet above from where we were sitting in the yacht. Plus it was great to see MOA at night from a different vantage point. It then turns around up next to the pier near Manila Hotel and heads back to the dock.

It was a memorable dinner for me and the missus which I highly recommend you do at least once in your life. But, I guess you have to wait until Feb 2010 to make a reservation.

Another Farrelly Brothers, Ben Stiller classic, this film is downright funny. A great addition to the movie soundtrack could be "Sad To Belong" by England Dan and John Ford Coley.

My Weight Loss Update

This morning I weighed 174.4lbs, no thanks to the delectable Cebu Lechon paksiw that Mom brought over the weekend (rapsa!).

Being the statistician geek that I am, I've created an Excel chart to track my progress. Hopefully there'll be real progress next week.

The Biggest Loser

My quest to reach the coveted 152lbs weight (ideal BMI equivalent for my height) has taken a new level. EG, my good friend working in Japan, proposed our little gang of college batchmates to shave the pounds off with a bet.

The guy who looses the most weight by April will receive an original NBA jersey of his choice, with his name stitched at the back...

...AND...

...an original pair of Zoom Kobe IV Carpe Diem limited edition basketball shoes! All courtesy of EG.

BUT (yes, there's always a but), if EG wins, we all treat him and his family to an eat-all-u-can at Jollibee when he arrives from Japan this April.

Wow. Talk about coincidence, I just blogged about the Zoom Kobe IV a few days back and now here's an opportunity to get my hands, err feet, on them, for FREE!

Dang!

Well, just to give an update. I'm now at 174.8lbs based on my digital scale's reading this morning. So far I've lost 1.6lbs. Ang hirap kase umiwas sa pagkain.

Sigh.

But I'm still keeping my hopes up. April is still almost 2 months away. That's still enough time for me to go down to the 152 magic number.

Let's see.

Her Son and Grandson

My mom tries to keep herself abreast with the latest computer technology whenever she can. She's taken advantage of Globe's P5.00 every 15mins surfing rate so that she's always online even when she's working outside Metro Manila. I believe she's one of those got first hold of those laptops with finger-scanning ID technology. Yup, she's pretty high-tech.

Well, the latest she's done is that she's opened a Multiply account which introduces her to the world of online networking.

Her first entry was simply entitled, "Can you spot the difference?" with a lone picture of me and Lucas. Yup, he's no doubt my son.

Btw, that pic of mine was taken right after I tried cutting my hair a la David's Salon which obviously killed any plan of opening up my own barbershop.

1.23.2009

Zoom Kobe IV

During my office lunch break I try to make it a point to window-shop at the Nike and Adidas sports shops. Last week, I was amazed to find the latest Kobe shoe: the Nike Zoom Kobe IV.

Today I dropped by again at Nike to see and hold it but I was taken aback when I saw that the pedestal where the shoe used to sit was empty. I approached one of the sales personnel and he said:

Sir, it's all out of stock.

How about in the other Nike stores?

Out of stock na din po. Naubos lahat due to early reservations.

Any chance they'll ship out a new batch?

Wala na po. Baka ibang model na po padadala.

How much did it cost?

P7,000 a pair.

Sigh. It was a very nice pair that I've come to appreciate much like the Air Jordan XI. But price is really the ultimate drawback, especially for a family man like me. Siguro ipon pa ng Citibank Rewards so I can exchange it for Nike GCs. Hehe, but that'll take some time. Hopefully there'll be a similar shoe as the XI or the IV when I've got the purchasing power.

But for now, I'll still stick it out with my 2-yr old Nike Uptempo Legend which btw I wore in our practice last night wherein I converted six wonderful 3-pointers and a fanciful teardrop drive to the basket.

Pero, sigh, ang ganda nung Zoom Kobe IV.

Weight Loss(?) Update

The reason for the question-mark on my blog-title literally questions my 2009 goal. The reading on our digital scale wasn't encouraging after I stepped onto it this morning: 177 lbs. When I started blogging my goal a few weeks back, I was at 176.4lbs. After a weekend of basketball and threadmills, I went down to 174lbs. I thought I was on the road to recovery back then but, sigh, here I am again.

The root-cause of the sudden relapse, I assume, would be the cold (cold!) mornings the entire week last week which caused me not to exercise at all. I only managed to get enough motivation yesterday morning when I walked around the neighborhood at about 7am for 30mins. The missus discouraged me from doing this type of workout again since she learned that there's a possibility of being kidnapped and asked for ransom. Haaay.

The missus said she heard in the evening news that the cold nights last week might be the last of it since temperatures are starting to rise again. I hope this encourages me to return to my loyal threadmill and jog off this excess weight every morning.

So, here I go again...

More Macros

At a heavy price of 5thou, I had my trusty point-n-shoot Canon IXUS750 digicam repaired this morning. The lens gear got broken during a wedding reception I attended last week so it had to be replaced. Good thing there was a spare part available at the repair center.

Whew, for a moment there I thought we were buying an SLR! Well, this IXUS750 of ours has accumulated its sentimental value already, having bought it with the missus at a gritty Singaporean at SimLim last 2006. This camera has been from Singapore to the Philippines, Malaysia, Europe, and the US. Thus it's good to know that it's spankin' refreshed and ready to shoot more scenes for me and my family.

Some more macro shots I tried at Owa's garden below...

The Goal & The Plan

January's a time for resolutions. They are often crafted but not carried out. In my continued quest to lose weight, I am going to concretize that goal by writing it on this blog.

So, here I go.

The Goal: To lose 20lbs by December 2009.

The Plan. This will entail following a set of rules that I must (MUST!) follow:

1. Get regular 30min or 3-4km workouts on my threadmill at least 4x a week
2. Weight-training should be followed by rule 1.
3. Play other sports whenever possible (basketball, badminton, football(?), etc.)
4. Reduce daily rice intake by 50-75%
5. Eat fish instead of meat whenever both are available
6. Stay away from softdrinks
7. Eat nuts for merienda instead of going down the mall to buy something else
8. Follow Paul Mckenna's 4 basic rules:
a. When you're hungry, go and eat!
b. Eat what you want!
c. Eat consciously!
d. When you're full, stop eating!

Let's see how this goes.

Applause naman dyan!

Nurse-ko-'day and Manong

A beautiful sunrise had greeted us as I wheeled the missus from our 10th floor room going to the elevator that led to the Huggery. A few minutes ago our sleep was awakened by the room phone signalling to us that Matteo is desperately hungry for milk, as heard in the background on the other line while the nurse told us if the missus can go down already.

The missus is inside the Huggery now, feeding our newborn Matteo. A few hours from now, we'll be on the road going home to have Lucas and Matteo together in the same room for the first time.

Let me just say that I'm grateful for all the staff here at Asian Hospital who've given us that trademark Filipino service-with-a-smile hospitality.

The missus is thankful as well to one of the nurses whom I've privately nicknamed "nurse-ko-'day."

Nurse-ko-'day was quite memorable since she was the one who gave the missus a spa-treatment-like bath on the hospital bed during the first day after the C-section. She was really great in the sense that she was very pro about shampooing and sponging the missus. It was at this moment of relaxation when we heard a faint knock on the door. It turned out to be a nun who was distributing communion to the patients. It was a Sunday so since the missus can't go down to the chapel yet, she agreed to have the communion then and there.

So imagine the missus, lying on the bed, being shampooed away by nurse-ko-'day and the nun saying the prayer before communion with the missus. Would it be wrong to call that moment a "spiritual relaxation?" Hehe.

Of course nurse-ko-'day realized a few seconds later that this was a divine moment so she had to stop the shampooing for a while. So, the missus, with Rejoice shampoo bubbles on her hair, opened her mouth to receive communion. Nurse-ko-'day immediately returned to her hair duties.

Another personality here is Manong. Manong is literally service-with-a-smile incarnate. He looks like a well-groomed, more handsome version of Apeng Daldal. He delivers the food trays to our room about 5 times a day. The food would always arrive with Manong's patented smile. "Heto na po lunch nyo mam," he would say, even if the lunch contained only bland soup and a gelatin since the missus was on liquid diet initially after the CS.

I was kidding the missus this morning when I was wrapping the paha around her waist. What if Manong suddenly comes in with the breakfast tray and sees her with her post-op belly?

"Mam heto na po yung breakfast nyo....ay taba!" Hehe.

All in all, the service here is excellent. Btw, I forgot to mention that last night we were given a romantic candlelit dinner at the doctors' lounge, with food from Makati Skyline. It was complete with red wine and a 4-meal course. It was great although I'm not sure if they will offer a steak-dinner for other types of post-ops like triple-bypass or angioplasty.

Kung Fu Panda

Great animation, this is a nice film for kids young and old.

A must-see film!

1.04.2009

Horton Hears A Who

My 1st boy has a Dr. Seuss book entitled "Scrambled Eggs Super," given by his Tita. I find it a joy reading this book to him whenever he requests it. He had actually memorized the 1st page and the page involving a long-legger Kwong. Yeah, I find that amazing too.

So when I saw that another Dr. Seuss book has been adapted to film animation, I just had to watch it. The animation is great and the story was, well, signature Dr. Seuss.

A nice film to watch with your kids.

My 2nd boy's here!

As of 6:40pm earlier this evening, I am now a father of TWO boys. My 2nd boy is a heavy fella, coming in at 7lbs and an ounce. The missus' obgyn said he looks like my 1st boy but only of a whiter complexion (nice!).

His name's Matteo Alonso. Matteo to keep up with the tradition of my 1st boy being named after one of the 4 Gospels. Alonso from Fernando Alonso, one of the popular Formula-One drivers today.

Life's good! :)

1.02.2009

Someone's joining the family tomorrow

After several months of being pregnant, the missus is finally relieved (and nervous at the same time) that my second boy is coming out tomorrow evening. We are currently preparing the stuff to bring in our two (or 3) night stay at the Asian Hospital so everything has to be checked. I'm responsible for all the eletronic gadgets, i.e. videocam, digicam, laptop, usb broadband, earphones, headphones, cellphone charger, and everything else that needs AC or DC power. Among the stuff being put into the bags and backpacks, the missus and I just light up with our "Oooaaahhh" smile as we prepare our second boy's things: a bunch of tie-up baby shirts and a pack of these cute cute (cute!) extra-small diapers. Haaay, I can't wait until I see him tomorrow evening. The missus is still praying for a miracle that she hopes that he will look like her. But, based from my first boy's (good) looks, she doesn't have a chance. Only heaven knows how he'll look like.

We're excited as well for our panganay since he'll soon have a playmate. He'll be a kuya, like me. I hope he'll grow up to be a good one. Tonight is his last night as our only boy, so he might be sleeping between us tonight.

So, we'll get back to our packing. My boy is right here beside me now repeatedly asking me to open the diaper package for his brother to see if it will be a good fit.
